Second super learning mission!

Hello Imagination Engineers!

In this post I am going to turn another flat activity into a super learning mission. On this occasion, the activity chosen to be turned into a super learning mission is the following: "After teacher's explanation, write a summary that explains the story behind the creation of the equestrian statue". It is clear that this activity is not meaningful or active. Furthermore, the activity is not interesting, enjoyable or motivating. In addition, the focus is not the student, it is the teacher who is talking all the time, consequently, communication does not take place. For all these reasons, it is necessary to modify the activity.

Firstly, I have thought carefully how to transform it into a learning mission. Super learning missions are learner-centred. The teacher must act as a facilitator while the learners are occupied in meaningful tasks. Besides, I need to create opportunities for meaningful learning. So, the idea that comes to my mind is that the students will be historical researchers who are in charge of the creation of a comic book. They will have to research on the Internet about one equestrian statue in pairs. After, the investigation they will create a comic strip which illustrates the story behind the creation of the equestrian statue. Putting together all the comic strips the students will make a comic book. In this super learning mission the students will use the following tools: Google Goggles, Google Documents, Comic Strip It!  and Emaze.

Now, I am going to explain, step by step, the instructions that the students have to follow to complete the super learning mission:

Historical Researchers de Elena Bermúdez

Then, the objectives that the students will achieve with this learning mission are:

- To understand the complex process behind the creation of an equestrian statue.

- To create a comic strip.

- To produce quality output in both language and content, as a result of an active and cooperative learning process.

- To increase their proficiency in the use of some applications and tools.

Here, you can also read the competences that will work:

- Digital Skills

- Learning to learn

- Communication Skills

- Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.

- Cultural awareness and expression.

Now, let me show you the example for my students:

On this occasion I have decided to collaborate with The ESL Times because like them we share the same goals as promoting collaborative work, team work and autonomous work, using ICT in the teaching-learning process, working language skills such as reading, speaking and writing. Besides, we want to encourage reading in English. In this case with the creation of a comic book children are going to read in English at the same time that they learn about History and Art.

Let me finish my post by reflecting on the knowledge and the experience that I have acquired as well as the process of learning.

I must say that I am really satisfied with the final result of this learning mission. It took me a lot of time to think how to turn the simple and dull activity into a motivating and meaningful learning experience which encourages learner autonomy. But, the effort is worthwhile.

Regarding to the use of digital tools, it was necessary to find the most appropriate tool for each part of the mission because I want to use free applications that were compliant with Android. During my internship periods in different schools, I noticed that schools have some tablets. They explained to me that it is cheaper than buying new computers. We need to be practical and realistic when we create learning missions because we need to have the necessary devices.

Finally, let me say that the benefits of collaborating with other teachers or collaborative movements are clear.  We can take advantage of the possibilities that new technologies offer us and ,in this way,  learn from others' work. Sharing your work online is a big step to improve education. We can create a bank of resources together. I totally recommend you to join to any collaborative movement.

First super learning mission!

Hello Imagination Engineers!

In this post I am going to turn a flat activity into a super learning mission. On this occasion, the activity chosen to be turned into a learning mission is the following: "Choose one of the equestrian sculptures of this unit. Read the information that appears in the unit and copy the important data about the statue." It is clear that this activity is not meaningful or active. Furthermore, the activity is not interesting, enjoyable or motivating. Moreover, the activity is not appropriately in terms of cognition because it is only focus on Low Other Thinking Skills (LOTS). In addition, there is not originality or creativity display. For all these reasons, it is necessary to modify the activity.

First of all, I have thought carefully how to transform it into a learning mission. Super learning missions have positive elements such as communication, HOTS, culture, scaffolding. Moreover, they are learner-centred, the teachers are available but unobtrusive when monitoring the students. Besides, I need to create opportunities for meaningful learning. So, the idea that comes to my mind is that the students will be artists who are in charge of the creation of a replica. But, as professional artists, first, they will have to search, on the Internet the main information about the equestrian statue in groups. After, the investigation they will create an infographic with the information. Once they are experts in the statue, they will reproduce it incorporating some variations. Because, it is necessary to include your personal mark in each work of art.

In these super learning mission the students will use the following tools: Google Documents, Google Goggles , Bloggler and Piktochart.

Now, I am going to explain step by step the instructions that the students have to follow to complete the super learning mission:

Imagination Artists de Elena Bermúdez

Then, the objectives that the students will achieve with this learning mission:

- To create an inphographic

- To increase their proficiency in the use of some applications and tools.

- To apply specific vocabulary to interpret and describe the different parts and features of equestrian sculptures.

- To value equestrian sculptures as a significant element for historic-artistic heritage.

- To produce quality output in both language and content, as a result of an active and cooperative learning process.

Here, you can also read the competences that will work:

- Digital Skills

- Learning to learn

- Communication Skills

- Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship.

- Cultural awareness and expression.

Finally, let me show you the example for my students:

On this occasion I have decided to collaborate with InfoEDUgrafías because like them I strongly believe in the potential of a good infhographic. I consider that infographics are extremely useful to understand complex information that would be hard to comprehend in a text. The powerful visual language of the infographic combined with its clearness make this artifact beneficial for our students. In this case with the creation of an infographic about an equestrian sculpture, children will learn about History and Art. In addition, as we share our work online other classmates and other people can learn many things about different statues in a few minutes.

Let me finish my post by reflecting on the knowledge that I have acquired as well as the process of learning.

I must say that I am really satisfied with the final result of this learning mission. I have never thought that I was capable of creating learning missions. It is true that I have done hard work in which I needed to plan everything carefully, fortunately, I can say that I am proud of the final result.

Regarding to the use of digital tools, I decided to use tools that can be useful for them in the future. I want to provide them with resources that give them autonomy such as Google Goggles. I am impressed of how just by scanning a picture or taking a picture you can find information about it online. This allows you to learn on your own. Also, I try to make them conscious of the different tools that they can use for free and they are really useful such as Google Documents and Piktochart. Based on my experience in this subject, I know that it is not necessary to spend a lot of time creating a good infographic, poster, diagram or mind map...

Finally, let me say that our students deserve more than activities which are base on reading and copying. I do not believe in learning by heart, I believe in learning by doing because it is the correct way to achieve core learning. We need to work together and share our materials because we can inspire others to follow our model at the same time as we learn from others who decided to do it before.

Moodle Mooc 10

Hello Imagination Engineers!

In this post, I am going to talk about MM10: Educational Digital Projects for CLIL a conference in which I participated with my Master's Degree classmates. I will share with you all the details and my personal reflection about the experience and the process that we followed to be ready for the big day.

First of all, it is necessary to have clear what it is Moodle Mooc 10 (MM10) is. It is a series of online conferences about different education issues that are taking place from May 1 to June 4 2017 on Moodle. The goal of the MOOC is to connect people from the education profession from different countries. These teachers share and exchange experiences, knowledge and practices and resources. Fortunately,  I was able to participate on the conference that took place on Thursday 4th of May at four o'clock at WizIQ. Its title was Open Educational Digital Projects for CLIL Primary Education.

  Source: https://docs.google.com/documen/d/1zMHab0y3cBItvZe89ahtY54XS6xwWuBUOV18ileAMlM/edit

Now, I will summarise all the process that we followed until the day of the conference. Firstly, I individually made a scheme or a draft in which I settled the main points of our speech for the conference day. The speech had to include a brief summary of the challenges accomplished, a reflection about our experience in the Master's module, mentioning our Open Educational Project and our learning diaries.

Once I had clear what I needed to include in our 5 minutes speech, I designed a support slide for the online live class.  In my slide, I proportionated my name, my twitter account, the URL of my blog and the title of my Open Educational Project. To do it, we used Google Drive, later my teacher uploaded it to Slideshare. Here you can see it:

Open educational digital projects for clil primary education from Jefe de Área de Formación en Red y Redes Sociales. INTEF

I was ready to rehearse our speech. My classmate and I were at home, but we were connected thanks to Moodle4teachers. One by one, we checked if everybody could hear and see us without problems. I have learnt that for giving a good speech on streaming, I need to have some headphones and a microphone. After the rehearsal, we were waiting eagerly for the 4th of May.

Hereafter, I let you the online conference. It is uploaded to Youtube and you can see it here

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtSBDWzqPWw

As you can appreciate in the video when we were not giving our speech, we acted as community managers sharing the URLs of the presenter learning diary or the link to the entry that he/she was mentioning. Definitely, we were a team. We gave support to the other not only when we facilitated information to the rest of the audience, we were also writing tweets about what they were saying. Besides, we invited our followers to join us! All the tweets included two hastags #moodlemooc10 and #ictclil_urjc. You can have a look on Twitter.

Before finishing, I want to reflect about the experience and what I have learnt during the whole process.

To tell you the truth, I was nervous during the whole conference. It does not usually happen to me, I made several speeches during the Degree and the Master's Degree, but I could not manage the situation, as I wanted. During the interventions of my classmates I started to be worried, I tried to calm down and be helpful. I proportionated some URLs and I was active on Twitter. As I was watching the incredible interventions of my classmates, I felt more confident. However, in my speech, I was completely nervous again. It is so hard to speak in front of the camera when you know that everybody is paying attention to you and the only thing that you can see is yourself on the screen. The more I watched the screen, the more nervous I felt. I think that the problem was that I could not see the friendly face of my classmates or someone in the audience what makes me feel fine. I was there alone and I can see my frightened face. Although, it was not my best speech, I am proud of me because I tried to do my best. Now, I value the experience in a positive way because I have been part of an incredible conference that showed all the effort and the time that we spent working on our Open Digital Educational Projects and our personal evolution. Furthermore, we shared our work with other people who are interested in improving and changing education. If I had the opportunity to be part of other conference, I would be more relaxed. Even thought, I remember the experience as a positive one, I would have liked to enjoy it at that moment.

As I said, I have learnt valuable things; I did not know about all the effort and the previous preparation behind a conference. In our case our speech was short, but it took me ages to prepared it and my effort was not reflected in my performance, it is a pity. The next time, I am going to rehearse in front of a mirror because I need to get used to seeing me and trying to hide my nervousness. Besides, I am going to buy a good pair of headphones with an integrated microphone because you spend hours listening to others and at the same time you need good quality of the sound when you are talking. I must confess that the most useful thing for me was to discover WizIQ. It is great because it allows you to create a virtual classroom. I am thinking about the rural schools for example in Castile. The weather conditions do not allow to the teacher to go to the school or to the school bus many times. I strongly believe that the teacher on these days can teach by using WizIQ. New technologies always surprise me. Let me finish by saying thank you to María Jesús García, Nellie Deutsch, my classmates and all the people that joined the conference. It was an enriching experience that I will never forget.

Designing an assessment rubric

Hello Imagination Engineers!

This time I am going to talk about one of the most difficult aspects of being a teacher ,which is the assessment. Besides, I will show you a rubric that I created to evaluate my students in my Open Educational Project: The Story Behind Artworks.

For this challenge, I have been reading about assessment, types of assessment and support strategies for assessment. The most useful book that I read is The TKT Course CLIL Module by Kay Bentley. I recommend you to read chapter 15, 16 and 17 because they proportionate a very precise explanation of what you need to know about assessement. Then, I decided to see many examples of rubrics. I found this list that has many different examples from reliable sources. María Jesús García  created it and she has collected 21 examples of rubrics. After my research, I knew that it was the moment to think about my Open Educational Project, the super-learning missions that I created and the final outcome of my project. Finally, I started to create a rubric to assess my students. I bear in mind  some important aspects during the process that I will show in the following image that I have done with Canva:

Poster by Elena Bermúdez

The creating of the rubric took me time, but you can see it here. I used Quick Rubric  for making it. It is a free tool and ,more importantly, easy to use. Then, I uploaded to Issuu.

Rubric for assessment by Elena Bermúdez

Now it is time to reflect on the learning that I have acquired thanks to this challenge.

Firstly, I am aware of the challenge of carrying out the assessment. To be able to assess effectively we need to find standards that are achievable. We need to be realistic and before assessing our learners have clear why we assess them. Also, it is totally recommended that learners know what aspects are being assessed and what learning outcomes they will have to achieve.

Focusing on the tools that I have used on this occasion, I must confess that this is the first time that I have not used Microsoft Word for creating the layout of a rubric. Quick Rubric is great for creating rubrics and it allows you to download all your creations without watermark. I highly recommend it to teachers.

Let me conclude by saying that I feel very happy because teachers are incorporating other ways of assessment apart from exams. Rubrics are useful tools for assessing communicative , cognitive, or practical skills as well as the learning process or the final outcome of a project among other things. I invite you to use them, you will not regret it.

Partner search

Hello Imagination Engineers!

In this post I  keep on my Open Educational Digital Project. On this occasion I am searching for a partner that lets me join his/her collaborative movement. I will persuade her/him using an  enterprise technique, the Elevator Pitch. Although, it is usually used in the business world, I will apply it with educational purposes to find a new partner that helps me to enrich my project. But, what are the main characteristics of a good Elevator Pitch? It must be a short description of your idea and it has to be explained, convincingly, in twenty seconds.

 Retrieved from: Pixibay

Firstly, it is very important to reflect about which collaborative movement you want to be part of. In my case, I would like to be part of infoEDUgrafías. This project is creating an infographic resource bank with the different contributions from pupils of all educative stages. In this way, everybody can learn from others works.  I consider that I can enhance my project giving my student the possibility to choose between creating a comic or an infographic in the first superlearning mission because there are several learning styles in a class and we must try to personalize education. Thus, they can explain the story behind that piece of art in they way they feel more comfortable. Besides, as infoEDUgrafías, I strongly believe in the potential of a good infhographic. I consider that infographics are extremely useful to understand complex information that it would be hard to comprehend in a text. The powerful visual language of the infographic combined with its clearness make this artifact beneficial for our students.

Hereafter, I will share my elevator pitch with you. As I mentioned, the main goal of it is to engage the people who run the collaborative project.

The steps that I have followed to create the Elevator Pitch are:

1st  I created a blank document in Google Drive and I wrote my draft.
2nd I rehearsed several times
3rd  I recorded the video with Photo Booth.
4th  I have edited with iMovie
5th  I have uploaded to YouTube .
6th  I have embedded in this entry.

I decided to use Google Drive because it will be automatically save online. So, if you have Internet connection, you can work on it on in any device. Photo Booth and iMovie are integrated in my Apple laptop and they are free, intuitive and simple to use. The final result is attractive and the quality of the sound and the video is quite good. I strongly recommend you to use it instead of Movie Maker does not offer the same quality in the final result and it has limited possibilities when you want to edit a video. Focus on the previous step for doing the recording of the Elevator Pitch, I let you the draft of my short speech, below. I have modified it several times in order to make it more engaging and precise.

Before finishing the post, I would like to reflect on the learning that I have acquired thanks to this challenge. First of all, I have discovered many interesting collaborative movements that are working extremely hard to improve the quality of education. Some of them as The 30 Goals Challenge, The Twima Project or infoEDUgrafías are not only promoting the exchange of resources or the collaboration between professional of the education sector, they are also pointing out the importance of being brave and trying to innovate. Education can be improved and the drivers of the change are these people who want to contribute by doing new things. They really inspire me because I can see that there are a lot of different ways to make innovation happen. Now, I want to be part of infoEDUgrafías, this is my first contribution to enhance education. Probably, it seems insignificant, but it is a little step for a better education and what it is really important is that everybody makes an effort to contribute to doing it. Secondly, I have learnt how to search for partners on the Internet and how to create an accurate Elevator Speech. This artifact is strongly powerful because just in a few seconds you can catch the attention of the audience and explain the main idea what you want to do. It is a clear example that quality is better that quantity. Finally, I just want to remember that you can find infoEDUgráfias on Twitter, Blogger and Pinterest

Turning my Open Educational Project into a collaborative one

Hello  Imagination Engineers!
Today I want to share my visual metaphor of my Open Educational Digital Project with you. As you know in my last post I showed you the design of my prototype and now I created a flyer that shows how my project is going to turn into a collaborative one.  Firstly, it is very important to reflect about why we should incorporate collaborative learning in our class.

I invite you to think of an activity that you really like. Would it be more fun it that activity involves other people? On the other hand, think of activity that you dislike. It will  probably be more pleasant if you do it with people. Students really enjoy working together because it is motivating. Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to get to know each other and provides huge possibilities for learning. So, Why not turn my project into a collaborative one?

I started to read about different possibilities to turn my project into a collaborative one and I would like to say that my Open Educational Digital Project has suffered some changes in order to make it more collaborative.

Collaboration within the classroom

Cooperative learning will be the fundamental pillar of the project. Students will have to work in groups to carry out the different challenges. For example, the final super learning mission will consist of creating an interactive map in which they have to locate different equestrian sculptures, including a brief description of its features and a picture. Each group will have to do a different statue, in this way they will become experts on this statue. In addition, they can learn about other works of arts because the map will also include the work of the other groups.

Collaboration out of the classroom

The final super mission which has been mentioned before, will be shared with the real world due to blogger technology. Moreover, the interactive map will be connected with other classes from other schools. Each school will work on the equestrian sculptures of a continent. In this way, the final result will be enriched thanks to the contributions of other learners. Finally, it would be great if I can join a collaborative movement on the net. I have been having a look and I decided to try and collaborate with The 30 Goals Challenge for Teachers. You will know more about in my next post.

Here I leave you my visual metaphor. For creating it, I have used a digital tool called Canva. This is a simple graphic design software, but it allows us to create powerful aesthetic flyers, posters and online presentations. It offers a huge variety of templates for free.
Let me conclude this entry, saying that with this task I have learnt that the use of collaborative learning improves relationship between students, giving all your pupils a more trusting and supportive atmosphere. Collaborative learning promotes a positive attitude to your teaching. There is not doubt that it is an essential feature that has to be included in modern teaching because it has plenty of advantages as I have mentioned before.
